Groundwork Class at Strides

Our Groundwork Class focuses on building a strong foundation for working with horses on the ground, without the need for riding. This class emphasizes understanding and respecting the horse, establishing a clear communication system between you and the animal, and ensuring safety for both the handler and the horse.

Key areas covered in the class include:

  • Proper Equipment: Participants will learn about the essential gear needed for groundwork, such as halters, lead ropes, and gloves, and how to use them effectively for safety and communication.

  • Parts of the Horse: Understanding the anatomy of the horse is crucial. The class will cover the main parts of the horse's body, such as the withers, flank, and poll, and how to work around them safely.

  • Basic Safety: Emphasis is placed on maintaining safety while working with horses, including proper positioning, staying aware of the horse's movements, and recognizing potential hazards.

  • Equine Body Language: Participants will learn how to read a horse’s body language to understand its emotions and reactions. This includes recognizing signs of comfort, stress, or aggression, helping to build trust and effective communication.

  • Control and Connection: The class teaches methods of gaining control and cooperation from the horse through body language and subtle cues. You’ll learn how to establish respect and create a positive relationship with the horse through groundwork.

  • Groundwork and Round Pen Work: Participants will engage in exercises that build trust and cooperation, using the round pen to facilitate the horse's movement and learn how to guide the horse through various tasks while maintaining control and mutual respect.

This class provides valuable skills for anyone wanting to work with horses on the ground, whether for training, therapy, or simply improving the bond between handler and horse.
